Understanding your locks
We would rather you knew enough to make a good decision than rely on us to make it for you. The short articles here explain how locks work, what wears them out, and which small habits keep your doors, keys and cars trouble-free for longer.

What is the difference between rekeying and replacing a lock?
Rekeying keeps the lock you have and changes only the pins inside the cylinder so a new key operates it and the old one no longer does. It suits hardware that is in good shape and simply needs a fresh key. Replacing swaps the whole lock or cylinder for new hardware, which makes sense when the existing lock is worn, damaged, of low grade, or when you want a different style or a keypad. Either can be done during a lockout visit. Home Lockout Service
Can we put a keyed deadbolt on both sides of the back door for extra security?
On a door people leave through while the building is occupied, the door needs to open from inside with one motion and no key, so a key-both-sides bolt is not the right tool there. Security is added instead with a heavy-duty exit device and a reinforced strike, a keyed trim outside, an alarm contact, or a door position sensor on the access system, all of which keep the way out clear. Do you need my spare key?
It helps if there is one. A crisp spare is the ideal pattern for the replacement, better than the broken halves and far better than a worn copy. It also lets the locksmith test the cylinder the moment the fragment is out, which shows whether the pins and springs are sound. If the spare is itself bent or worn, mention that too; it is a candidate for retirement rather than a pattern. Broken Key Extraction
What is a security strike box and why fit one?
A security strike is a heavier plate with a formed steel pocket that wraps around the bolt instead of leaving it in bare wood. It is set into the jamb and fixed with long screws, typically three inches, that pass through the jamb and the shim space into the framing, with the longest screws placed nearest the door stop where the bolt bears. Manufacturers specify the pocket depth so the bolt extends fully. The result spreads a kick across the wall stud rather than two small screws. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks
Can a smart lock or keypad deadbolt be rekeyed?
The mechanical part of it can. Many keypad or app-controlled deadbolts hide a small keyed cylinder under a cap for the day the batteries fail, and that cylinder can be pinned to your house key so the backup key on your ring is the same one that opens the other doors; some models are key-free and rely on an external battery backup instead. Codes are a separate matter: the locksmith will suggest deleting any code belonging to someone who no longer needs access at the same time. Lock Rekeying
How long should the bolt be?
The bolt should extend at least 25 mm into the frame, which is the standard throw for a dwelling's entrance doors and the length most residential deadbolts provide. Part of the bolt stays inside the door for support while the rest sits in the pocket. A hardened steel insert that spins under a saw blade is a common feature worth having on doors that face a street or laneway. Deadbolt Installation
Can I stop people copying my house key?
A restricted keyway helps with that. The key blanks are controlled by the manufacturer and its authorised locksmiths, so a copy generally requires the card, record or authorisation the program uses, cutting down on copies made at an ordinary kiosk. It suits homes where keys are lent to cleaners, contractors or tenants. The cylinders are fitted in the normal way, and you keep the key card safe because it is what future copies depend on. Lock Replacement & Upgrade
Which parts usually need replacing?
Springs, first and foremost: the latch spring, the hub spring that returns the knob, and the small springs on the deadbolt levers. After that, the spindle and knob set screws, a hub whose square has worn round, a worn deadbolt lever or follower, and on later locks the cylinder set screw or the cylinder itself. Bolts, cases and trim are almost always kept, cleaned and refitted rather than replaced. Vintage Mortise Lock Service

High Security Locks
Is a mechanical dial or an electronic keypad the better choice for a business safe?
Each suits a different way of working. A mechanical dial has no battery to fail and a long service life, but only ever holds one combination at a time. An electronic keypad allows separate codes for different staff and an audit trail on some models, at the cost of needing battery changes. Either can be fitted with a genuinely high security rating; the choice usually comes down to how many people need independent access. Safe Opening & Combination Change
How much weight does a filled safe put on the floor?
It depends entirely on the unit's size and construction, since the steel body itself usually weighs far more than whatever ends up inside it. A small document safe and a large commercial unit sit at very different points on that scale. Confirming the safe's own weight before delivery, and checking it against the floor it will sit on, is part of the assessment rather than something guessed at on arrival. Safe Installation & Servicing
What actually makes a lock high security?
Three things working together. The cylinder has a second locking mechanism, usually a sidebar released by finger pins or rotating pins, plus hardened steel in the path of a drill, so picking, bumping and drilling take far longer than on an ordinary lock. The deadbolt and strike are heavier and fastened into the framing. And the key is cut on a patented or restricted blank that only an authorised person can have copied. Remove any one and the door is weaker than the label suggests. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks
Is a restricted keyway worth it for a business?
A restricted keyway uses blanks that only the locksmith or authorized source can obtain, released against whatever that key-control program requires, a signed letter, card, signature record or factory authorization naming who may order keys. Hardware stores and kiosks have no blanks, so copies are far harder to get without your say-so. It costs more per key than a standard keyway and is most valuable where keys pass through many hands, such as retail with part-time staff, shared premises or anywhere the count of copies has drifted before. Commercial Rekeying
Do all the doors on my property need to be part of the master system?
No. Some doors, such as a private office or a room with a single regular user, can reasonably stay on their own key outside the hierarchy if there is no real benefit to including them. The assessment is partly about deciding which doors belong in the system and which are simpler left alone, rather than assuming every lock has to join. Master Key System Design
What happens to the doors if the power goes out?
Outage behaviour depends on how that opening was built: battery backup can be sized to carry the reader, the lock and the controller through a typical outage, so a brief power loss need not lock anyone out or, on a fire-alarm-tied opening, lock anyone in, but that backup and any mechanical key override are specified per opening rather than assumed for every door. Fail-safe hardware unlocks once power has been out longer than the backup lasts; fail-secure hardware stays locked, and what opens it depends on the hardware chosen. Access Control Installation
How is panic hardware different from fire exit hardware?
Panic hardware and fire exit hardware share the same push-to-release action, but fire exit hardware is additionally tested and listed for use on a fire-rated door assembly. That extra listing matters because a fire door has to keep an active latch bolt at all times; it cannot carry a mechanical dogging function the way ordinary panic hardware sometimes can, so the two are not interchangeable on a rated opening. Car Keys
How long does a car lockout take once the locksmith arrives?
Confirming identification and looking the car over take a few minutes, and the opening itself is often the shortest part. A wedge-and-reach entry or a picked door cylinder on a common car is a matter of minutes; a frozen lock, a dead car battery or a car with hidden cylinders takes longer. Cutting and programming a replacement key is a separate stage that adds time, and you are given a sense of it before it starts. Car Lockout Service
Can a key be made for an older car with no chip?
Yes, for a vehicle that genuinely has no immobilizer, checked by VIN and equipment rather than assumed from age, since several early-2000s vehicles already shipped with a factory immobilizer and coded key. Where that is the case, it is the simplest key work there is: a blade cut to the factory code from the VIN or to a reading of the door lock, rather than copied from a worn original. If the ignition has become sloppy, the locksmith can rebuild it in the same visit. Car Key Replacement
What if I have lost track of how many keys already exist for the car?
That is worth mentioning when you call, since it changes the plan. If the count is genuinely unknown, or a key was lost at some point and never accounted for, reprogramming the vehicle to accept only the keys currently in hand is often the sounder route, rather than adding a new spare on top of an uncertain set that might include a key nobody can locate anymore. Spare Car Key Duplication
Will adding a new fob affect my remote start or passive entry?
On many vehicles, no, not for the fobs already working: adding a fob to the accepted list does not change how they behave. Some procedures instead need every retained fob present and re-registered, so check the vehicle's own routine first. Either way, the new fob is tested for every function the vehicle offers, including remote start and passive entry where fitted. Key Fob Programming
